Moonlights #109
Umami packs, Vision Pro reviews, favorite read of the week, a new way to search, and another guest appearance from JC.
Try 🍄
I've been cooking a lot lately, trying out a few recipes that venture beyond the usual cremini and portobello mushrooms that I usually have access to at our grocery stores here in Nashville. But recently, I was strolling through Whole Foods, and I came across Smallhold, an organic mushroom farm that has an amazing selection. The company is designed to help restaurants and home chefs easily grow a variety of gourmet mushrooms, giving more people access to the different types. Last week I made golden mushroom soup with buttered orzo, and instead of using the same ol’ mushrooms, I got to use the Umami and Oyster Pack below, and the flavor was incredible 👌.

Apple Vision Pro reviews are in. The price point is wild, but there’s something about this that feels like the beginning of a new era. Maybe it misses the mark, maybe it’s the actual beginning of the spatial computing era, maybe it’s just a better ‘TV’ experience. It’s too early to say. But, after diving into the reviews and watching someone effortlessly stream five NBA games in their living room (screenshot below), I can’t help but think this is definitely going to be a thing. AR/VR headsets have been around for over a decade, but this is Apple’s first attempt. Regardless of whether this specific model or style ends up succeeding, I’m pretty pumped to see where things land. It’s awkward—no question about it—but the form factor will end up changing, becoming less invasive, smaller, and more socially acceptable…ya know, like staring at your phone all day 🫣 I think the Vision Pro has it’s Watch moment, where it needs a few years to mature before more people start buying. That’s what I have to tell myself to hold back on v1. We’ll see.

The best thing I read all week 👇
Apps 📱
Arc Search is a new iPhone app from the team at The Browser Company, the makers of Arc, my favorite browser, and the best browsing experience on the internet (imo). They reimagined the browser, and now they are working on a new way to search. Their Notes on Roadtrips (company values) are well worth the read. They encourage a mindset of curiosity, collaboration, and passion in everything they do, and you can tell when you use their products. Fan boi 🙋♂️
From Me 🎒
This week was all about focusing on choosing that positive energy over everything else. So much of that choice for me has to do with finding balance in the day-to-day. Too many days without balance—I feel it. And no surprise here, but when there’s balance, everything else feels right. I’m on a little streak of doing meditation + breath work using Open, and I’m noticing a big difference. I’m also finally feeling normal after nursing a calf and ankle injury for the last few months, and I’m back to playing 🏀 which is still one of my favorite things in the world to do. Of course, all of these things contribute to that balance, and lately things are feeling just right.
And you all know James Clear is a frequent guest on Moonlights, so you won’t be shocked that he’s back, closing out #109 with another HR from his 3, 2, 1 newsletter.
When I go into a situation, I try to keep a mindset of baseline optimism.
— When starting the day: It's going to be a good day.
— When meeting someone new: I'm going to like them.
— When trying something challenging: It's going to work out.
Problems will inevitably arise and I'll deal with them as the situation demands, but my preference is to assume I'm on a winning path until proven otherwise.
